Microsoft Visio 2016 / 2019 / 2021 – Installation & Activation

This guide will help you install and activate Microsoft Visio Professional for any of the following versions:

• Visio 2016 Professional
• Visio 2019 Professional
• Visio 2021 Professional

All versions install the same way and share nearly identical activation steps.
Just follow the instructions below.

Before You Start

Make sure you have:

• A valid Visio product key (2016, 2019, or 2021)
• A Windows PC
  • Visio 2016 > Windows 7, 8.1, 10, 11
  • Visio 2019 & 2021 > Windows 10 or Windows 11
• A Microsoft Account
• A stable internet connection

Step 1 – Download Microsoft Visio (All Versions)

You can download Visio in two ways depending on your key type.

Option A – Download from Microsoft (setup.office.com)

Works for Visio 2016, Visio 2019 & Visio 2021.

1. Go to https://setup.office.com/
2. Sign in with your Microsoft Account.
3. Enter your Visio product key.
4. Select your language and region.
5. Click Download.

This downloads the official Microsoft Click-to-Run installer.

Option B – Install Using an ISO File

Common for Visio 2016, but also used for later versions depending on the license.

1. Download the ISO/IMG file from your store.
2. Right-click the file > Mount.
3. A new virtual drive will appear.
4. Open the virtual drive and locate setup.exe.

Step 2 – Install Microsoft Visio

The installation method is the same for all Visio versions.

Click-to-Run Installer (setup.office.com)

1. Open the downloaded installer.
2. Click Yes when Windows asks for permission.
3. Installation will start automatically.
4. When you see:
   “You’re all set! Visio is installed now.”
   > Click Close.

ISO / Mounted Installer

1. Open the mounted virtual drive.
2. Run setup.exe.
3. Wait for installation to finish.
4. Click Close.

Step 3 – Activate Microsoft Visio

Activation happens when you open Visio for the first time.

Automatic Activation

1. Open Visio.
2. Sign in with the Microsoft Account used at setup.office.com.
3. Visio will automatically attempt online activation.

Manual Activation (If Required)

If Visio asks for a key:

1. Click Enter Product Key.
2. Enter your 25-character key for Visio 2016 / 2019 / 2021.
3. Click Activate.

How to Check Activation Status

1. Open Visio.
2. Go to File > Account.
3. Under Product Information, look for:
   “Product Activated”
